Recently there’s news about digital radio in Europe by NY Times. The conclusion is actually quite simple – they are not ready for digital radio yet.

Hum… sorry to say that but somehow, I agreed.

If you only treat digital radio (aka DAB in Europe ) as another FM radio with improved sound quality, please save it. First of all, I don’t think DAB provides EXTREMELY good sound quality since it’s not only about the biterate. Speaker quality, design of the receiver etc. also affect the quality. So, please don’t expect to get real CD quality and sell it as the main feature.

The concept of digital radio should focus on the extra services – what you can do more with your radio receiver!

For example, when I listen to the radio and there’s a great song broadcasting, well, naturally I want to know who the singer is (and maybe sing along), please show me the lyrics and the album picture on the panel. Or if I want to buy that song alone, please let me pay right away and get that song saved in the device. This is just an example, for sure there’s more to provide because DAB can really do a lot of things! IF broadcasters can be more creative and think of more innovative services, DAB won't stop in the UK only. It will be everywhere.

Again, DAB is not the improved version of FM. Please.
